About
Scarlett McCalman is a woodworker and artist based in New York City, where she was born and raised. She received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art. After years of working in the set industry, where she was constantly disappointed in the prolific amount of waste the industry produces, she has dedicated her solo practice to creating heirloom-quality furniture and artwork with responsibly sourced materials.

Scarlett began making furniture to fit her specific needs within the confines of her tiny New York apartment. After multiple lofts, built-in staircases with added chests of drawers, and unique shelving constructions she began producing stand-alone pieces with scraps she salvaged while building sets. Traditional craftsmanship and craft movements have inspired much of her research, but she is entirely self-taught. Her shop in Brooklyn is packed with wood salvaged from across the city, which she refines and utilizes in her one-of-a-kind pieces. She hopes to inspire admirers of her work to think and live sustainably, through work that exemplifies the exquisite qualities available in the natural world.
